A film by Subhash Kapoor, Rajkumar is a biographical and emotional crime drama set in the city of Mumbai and based on the life of Indian Cricket World Cup legend Bishan Singh Bedi. Review: The story is about a man whose spirit has been broken by all his past failures who gets to play one last game where he will do whatever it takes to win. However, what makes this movie stand out is how we get to experience the story from two perspectives — that of Ramesh (Raj Kumar's son) who struggles with his father's alcoholism and that of the wordsmith-turned-detective Anand Giridharadas (played brilliantly by Dev Patel). The movie shows how the world of the 20th century cricketer has changed over time with "wicket-keepers" now playing first-class cricket. Mumbai is the backdrop of Rajkumar, which is set in the '70s. Bedi's son Ramesh and his friends spend their time watching and following cricketing greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Ajit Wadekar. Bedi is disgusted with his life, and even more so when he learns that his profession is that of an "alcoholic" who is seen as a circus-freak in cricket circles by the public. Bedi decides to quit drinking completely. It works for a while, but soon the calls from adoring fans become too much for him, and he can't resist giving in to temptation. Bedi's playing career is put in jeopardy once again. Bedi's son Ramesh faces a life-changing decision: Does he follow in his father's footsteps and join the police force, run the family business, or take up an impoverished profession like medicine?The film collected 4 crore in opening weekend and became a huge hit. It collected 59.5 crores in its lifetime and was declared Blockbuster movie of 2014 by Box Office India. The film earned from overseas from 150 screens all over the world.
