DirectX was first introduced as a low-level graphics library in 1995 by Microsoft. It was designed to provide application developers with a set of optimized routines for handling 2D and 3D graphics tasks on Windows computers. In recent years it has been used as an essential tool for developers to create games and other graphical applications using Direct3D – a component of DirectX – which is now DirectX version 9 or 10. The latest version, DirectX 11, has been out since 2009 and will remain the primary platform until at least sometime in 2013. This release has brought stability improvements that have made the interface easier to work with. This new version also has a smaller footprint, supporting hardware from any vendor, and being more scalable. In 2004, The DirectX 9.0c update brought widespread changes to the API and its associated technologies:The DirectX 10 API was released in June 2005 and offers video cards and processors with enhanced execution abilities (specifically Pixel Shader4.0) the ability to perform high quality real-time imaging, transformed surfaces and other features unattainable at the time of release by previous DirectX versions (DirectX 7 through DirectX 9). It also introduces support for hardware-accelerated video encoding and decoding, including video transcoding. Version 10 was released in 2005–06 with many high-end features that were previously made available only to the DirectInput API, including multi-threading, improved hardware acceleration of all operations performed by the API, dynamic loading/unloading of components, advanced programmable pipeline control with explicit state setting and destruction calls. DirectX 10 includes support for Shader Model 3. 0, an extension of the Shader Model 1.x specification to which Microsoft added volumetric rendering capabilities in DirectX 9.0c. The finalized Shader Model 3.0 spec is available in PDF format, although it is not yet published by Microsoft. DirectX 11 was released in June 2009 at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California to developers via a public beta test for Windows XP and Vista users, with full support for Vista available shortly thereafter. This version is backward compatible with DirectX 10 applications that are written in accordance with the specifications of DirectX 10 or Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). It adds support for hardware-accelerated video encoding and decoding, including video transcoding; the latest revisions of Microsoft's UAVs (UAVs are visual effects or render state that can be dynamically changed or swapped in between frames. The updates were released January 13, 2010 followed by the full Windows 7 OS on March 14, 2010. Direct X 11 features include:More than 80 different APIs are available for DirectX technologies to help make the most of the hardware installed on Windows systems. DirectX is also used as a component of games (such as "Fallout 3") and other applications (such as "World Of Warcraft"). It was a requirement for a 2007 security vulnerability in Internet Explorer during games with DirectX. cfa1e77820
